How to Make your Own Floral Preservative

Floral Preservative 300x201 How to Make your Own Floral Preservative

Have you ever wonder what would you do when u get a surprise delivery from the florist and you don’t have a flower preservative at home to enjoy the maximum value of your fresh flowers, or you cut your own blossoms from the backyard or garden but you don’t have a flower food to retain the vibrancy of these plants. Don’t fret a simple effective and all-natural homemade floral preservative will allow you to keep the lovely arrangements you grow and design yourself as fresh as the ones that you buy at a florist.

Even when you buy the fresh flowers from market and a commercial flower preservative is provided from the florist, consider trying a do-it-yourself recipe. While commercial products can offer surety of the longevity of your cut flowers, a homemade preservative helps you to save your money and get great results from your own environmentally friendly flower food with the help of a few common household items. Moreover making your own flower food allows you to obtain more if you need it.

An easy-to-make recipe of homemade floral preservative is given below:

Step 1
Wash the vase you are using thoroughly in hot water with soap and rinse well to prepare it for the flowers and the homemade preservative. An unwashed vase contains bacteria, dust and dirt which will shorten the lifespan of your blossoms.

Step 2
Fill the vase with a quart of lukewarm water and then mix one teaspoon of sugar, one teaspoon of household bleach and two teaspoons of lemon or lime juice in it.

Step 3
Add your fresh cut flowers into the vase watch the water level inside the vase and add more water with the preservative mixture when needed.

Many flower lovers are still unaware of the importance of floral preservative and the role it plays to keep the flowers fresh. Flower food definitely increases flowers’ vase life by providing three ingredients that are: carbohydrates, biocides, and acidifiers to the flowers, preventing build-up of bacteria in the water, and altering the pH level of water in the vase. Carbohydrates in the form of sugar is supplied because a flower can no longer produce its own sugar once cut where it is necessary for a flower’s survival. Citric acid is provided to achieve hydration as it adjusts the pH level of water to facilitate and increase water uptake through the stems. Lastly, the biocides are there in the form of bleach to minimize the bacterial growth and enhance the look and health of the flowers.

At first, the home-made recipe may not produce as good results as the pre-packaged versions but it is almost free and with “natural” ingredients we know it is safe to handle and pour on the garden / grey water. Just remember to Change the water in the vase with new flower food every 3 days. Don’t forget to re-cut the flower stems too. Always keep your fresh flower arrangement in a cool place away from direct sunlight and drafts.
