Bonsai, in Japanese, means “tray-planted”. The basic idea of bonsai plants is to create a tree or plant, and even landscapes, in miniature. Flowering bonsai are symbols of harmony with nature.
For its healthy growth, the Flowering Bonsai plant is fed, watered, clipped and trained at regular intervals. The bonsais are planted in small pots. Wire coils are applied to get a desired shape of plants.

Bonsai includes four different sizes of plants with a different maturing time:
Miniature Bonsais: Grow to 2 inches in height; require about 5 years time to mature.

Medium Bonsais: Grow from 6-12 inches; maturing in 3 years
Average Bonsais: Grow to 2 feet; maturing in 3 years

Chinese are considered as the pioneers of the art of Bonsai, more than 1000 years ago. Initially it was termed as “pun-sai” which means the practice of growing single specimen trees in pots.
Flowering bonsai plants can be developed from:

•    from young trees,
•    from natural stunted trees transplanted into containers.
With proper care, a bonsai can last for even centuries.

•    Watering: For bonsai plantings, watering is the most important step. The soil should always be kept moist; so a regular watering is required for bonsai trees. Water the bonsai until it starts draining out of the pot.
•    Pruning/trimming: Both pruning and trimming of stems and roots are very important. Pruning allows for the bonsai to be kept in shape; while trimming is done for bonsai growth.
•    Lighting: Majority of bonsai require good light conditions. Always put bonsais in a place which allows them plenty of light as well as fresh air. A place near the window could be the ideal one.
•    Junipers: Be careful! Junipers should not get dried up.
•    Fertilization: A very crucial part of bonsai gardening which should be done regularly. Twice a year would be good enough in order to keep the tree healthy.
•    Environment: A flowering bonsai enjoys a sunny location. Keep the bonsais away from the frost as majority of them are not frost tolerant.
